Storage is where cheap quotes get cheap
The number nobody puts on the front page is retention: how many days of footage the recorder actually holds. A quote for eight cameras at high resolution with a small hard disk might store four days. The system looks identical on paper to one storing thirty.
Four days is frequently useless. Stock discrepancies surface at a monthly count, and a dispute about a delivery might not arise for a fortnight. By the time anyone looks, the footage has been overwritten.
Ask every quote to state the retention period in days at the quoted resolution and camera count. If it is not written down, it has not been calculated.
Resolution without placement is wasted money
A 4K camera pointed at a doorway in glare produces less usable evidence than a well-placed 2MP camera at the right height. Identification requires the face to occupy enough of the frame, which is a distance and angle question before it is a specification question.
This is why a survey matters more than a brochure. An installer who quotes over the phone is guessing at the two things that decide whether the footage is ever useful.
The five questions worth asking
How many days of footage will this hold, at this resolution and camera count?
Which areas are deliberately not covered, and why?
Who holds the recorder password after installation — us or you?
What is included in the AMC, and how often are outdoor lenses cleaned?
Is surge protection included on outdoor camera runs?
