Biometric Access Control & Attendance Systems in Kerala
A camera records what happened. Access control decides who was allowed in the first place.
OptiFi Technologies supplies and installs biometric access control and time-attendance systems for offices, schools, factories and clinics across Kerala. Access control answers a question a camera cannot: not what happened, but who was authorised to be there. Combined with attendance, it also removes the payroll disputes that come from manual registers — the same record that opens the door produces the hours worked, with no separate process to reconcile.

Access Control and CCTV Do Different Jobs
They are complementary, not alternatives
CCTV is a record. It tells you what happened after it happened, which matters for investigation and deterrence but does not prevent anything on its own.
Access control is a decision. It determines who can open which door, at what times, and produces a log of every attempt — successful or not. For a stores area, a server room or a records office, that is a materially different level of protection.
Used together they answer the whole question. The access log says who entered at 21:14; the camera confirms it was that person and not their card. Most sites we work on need both, and we integrate them so the two records line up rather than living in separate systems.
Attendance Is Where It Pays for Itself
The same reader, a second use
Access control is bought for security and frequently justified by payroll. The reader that opens the door also produces the hours worked, which removes the manual register, the disputes about who arrived when, and the monthly reconciliation between two records that never quite agree.
For businesses running shifts, overtime or multiple branches, that is usually the larger saving. Reports export in a form your payroll process can consume directly, rather than requiring someone to re-key them.
It also removes buddy punching, which manual registers and card-only systems cannot. That is the specific advantage of biometrics over cards: a card can be handed to a colleague, and a fingerprint cannot.
Choosing the Right Reader
Fingerprint, face or card — the site decides
Fingerprint
Lowest cost per door and well proven. Struggles in environments where hands are wet, dusty or gloved — which rules it out for parts of a factory or a clinic.
Face recognition
Contactless and fast, and unaffected by hand condition. Needs controlled lighting to perform reliably; a reader facing direct glare will frustrate everyone.
Card and fob
Fastest throughput for high-traffic entrances and the easiest to issue to visitors. On its own it identifies the card, not the person.
Combined
High-security areas commonly use card plus biometric, so a lost card alone opens nothing.
Installation and What Comes After
Handover matters more than hardware
Installation covers reader mounting, door hardware, controller wiring, network configuration, enrolment of staff and a walkthrough with whoever will run it. If the only person who can add a new employee is the installer, the system has not been handed over.
Door hardware is where quotes quietly differ. Electromagnetic locks, strikes, exit buttons, emergency release and fire-alarm integration all matter, and the last one is not optional — a door that cannot release on a fire alarm is a life-safety problem, not a configuration preference.
Kerala's humidity and coastal salt air shorten the life of outdoor readers. Where a reader must sit outside we specify appropriately rated hardware and include it in the AMC schedule rather than treating failure as a surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a biometric access control system cost?
It depends on door count, reader type and whether existing door hardware can be reused. A single-door attendance terminal is a very different figure from multi-door control across a campus. We survey the site and quote an itemised figure with no hidden charges.
Can it integrate with our payroll or HR software?
In most cases yes. Attendance data exports in standard formats, and we configure the export to match what your payroll process needs. Tell us which system you use and we will confirm compatibility before quoting.
What happens during a power cut?
Controllers are specified with battery backup so access and logging continue through an outage, and doors fail safe on a fire alarm. Given KSEB supply conditions, we treat backup as part of the design rather than an accessory.
Is fingerprint or face recognition better?
It depends on the environment. Fingerprint costs less per door and is well proven, but struggles with wet, dusty or gloved hands. Face recognition is contactless and unaffected by hand condition but needs controlled lighting. We recommend based on the site survey, not a preference.
Is biometric data safe, and what are our obligations?
Biometric templates are stored as mathematical representations rather than images, and cannot be reversed into a fingerprint. Under the DPDP Act 2023 biometric data is personal data, so you need a lawful basis, staff should be informed, and access to the system must be controlled. We configure with that in mind and document it.
Can we manage multiple branches from one place?
Yes. Multi-site systems are managed centrally, so access rights and attendance reporting cover every location without someone visiting each site to make a change.
Do you provide maintenance?
Yes, under an AMC covering reader cleaning and calibration, firmware updates, controller battery checks and fault response. Outdoor readers in Kerala need scheduled attention rather than reactive repair.
