Odoo is an open-source ERP developed by a Belgian company, built as a set of modules covering sales, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, accounting, projects and more. Its distinguishing feature is that these are one system rather than separately-designed products stitched together, which is why it handles production considerably better than most alternatives at its price.
Community or Enterprise
Odoo comes in two editions and the difference is frequently misunderstood.
Odoo Community is free and open source. It covers sales, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, projects and basic accounting, and it is genuinely capable — many businesses run on it permanently. What it is not is free to operate: it needs hosting, updates and someone who understands it.
Odoo Enterprise is licensed per user and adds full accounting, the Studio customisation tool, mobile applications, and vendor-backed support. The decision usually turns on whether you need the Enterprise-only accounting features.
For most small production units we work with, Community plus a properly configured accounting workflow has been sufficient. Our fee is for implementation rather than licences, so we have no reason to push you upward — and we say so when Community fits.
Where Odoo Is Genuinely Strong
Manufacturing
Bills of materials, work orders and stock movement in one system, so costing follows production automatically rather than being reconstructed afterwards in a spreadsheet.
Complex inventory
Multi-location stock, lot and serial tracking, landed costs. Handles the cases where lighter systems start requiring workarounds.
Batch traceability
Tracing a finished consignment back to its raw material batch — a regulatory requirement in food and Ayurveda manufacturing rather than a convenience.
Project costing
Projects, timesheets and accounting connected, which answers what an engagement actually cost against what was billed.
Deep customisation
It is open source, so almost anything is possible — which is a strength and a trap in equal measure.
The Customisation Trap
Odoo's flexibility is the most common reason Odoo projects fail. It is entirely possible to rebuild it around an existing broken process, which preserves whatever was wrong with that process and adds permanent maintenance cost on top.
Our position is that customisation should be reserved for where your process is genuinely a competitive difference. For a timber unit that might be how offcuts are valued; for an exporter, how consignment costing works. Approval routing that exists because one manager preferred it in 2015 is not in that category.
The practical consequence of over-customising is a system nobody can upgrade, because it has been modified beyond recognition. We push back on that, which is occasionally an uncomfortable conversation and considerably cheaper than the alternative.
Where Odoo Is Not the Answer
If your core need is CRM and accounting with light inventory, Zoho is usually cheaper to run and faster to get value from. Odoo's advantages concentrate in production and complex stock, and paying for that when you do not need it is a poor trade.
Odoo will also not replace a specialised domain system — a hospital information system, a student information system, or a statutory-reporting platform. It works well alongside those for purchasing, budget control and assets, but it does not substitute for them.
And if nothing in your business is currently breaking, the honest answer may be that you do not need an ERP yet. We have told businesses exactly that rather than sell an implementation.

A focused rollout of core modules typically runs six to twelve weeks. Manufacturing deployments with genuine customisation take longer. Phasing delivery so early modules are in use while later ones are configured is considerably safer than a single go-live.
Can Odoo handle GST and Indian compliance?+
Yes, configured for it. Indian localisation covers GST, e-invoicing and the reporting requirements, and it is set up at implementation rather than added afterwards.
Odoo or Zoho?+
