Zoho Books for Indian Businesses
Accounting built for Indian tax, configured properly the first time.
Zoho Books was built for Indian tax rather than adapted to it, which is why it needs far less configuration than general international accounting software. It still needs some, and the businesses that struggle at filing time are the ones that treated setup as a formality.
What we configure
The GSTIN and place-of-supply logic come first, because they determine the tax split on every invoice thereafter. A wrong state code produces integrated tax where central and state tax belong, on every document until it is corrected.
Item masters are the second job and usually the larger one. Every product and service needs its HSN or SAC code on the record itself, and the correct rate against it. An invoice prints without them; a return does not reconcile.
Organisation and tax setup
GSTIN, registration type, place-of-supply rules, fiscal year and multi-state structure where more than one registration exists.
Item and chart of accounts
HSN and SAC codes at category level where possible, tax rates, and a chart of accounts that matches how you actually report.
E-invoicing and e-way bills
IRP credentials, sandbox testing before go-live, and the print template that carries the returned IRN and signed QR code.
Banking and reconciliation
Bank feeds where your bank supports them, and a monthly routine for agreeing your records against the portal.
Where Zoho Books stops
It is accounting software with strong Indian tax handling. It is not a manufacturing system, and a business with production, bills of material or job work will need Zoho Inventory alongside it or a fuller ERP.
Knowing that before implementing avoids the expensive pattern of adopting Books, growing into requirements it was never meant to cover, and migrating again eighteen months later.
Zoho Books — Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zoho Books file GST returns automatically?+
It prepares the return data from your recorded transactions and supports filing, which removes the manual transcription step where most errors used to come from. Reconciling against what your suppliers have filed remains a monthly task.
Can it generate e-invoices and e-way bills?+
Yes, where they apply to your business. Invoices can be registered with the Invoice Registration Portal to obtain an IRN and signed QR code, and e-way bills generated for goods movement, once credentials are configured.
How long does implementation take?+
For a business with a tidy item master, days rather than weeks. The variable is data: a catalogue missing HSN codes or with inconsistent units of measure takes longer to prepare than the configuration takes to apply.
Can Zoho Books handle more than one GST registration?+
A business registered in multiple states files separately for each, and the structure needs to reflect that. It is a decision to take during implementation rather than retrofit once transactions exist.
Do we need Zoho Books if we already use Tally?+
Not necessarily. Businesses usually move when they need multi-user access, stock across locations or integration with sales and support, rather than because Tally has stopped doing accounting well.
What happens to our data if we stop paying?+
Access ends at the end of the paid period and data remains exportable for a defined window. Exporting a copy periodically is sensible practice with any subscription platform.
