Odoo Manufacturing for Indian Factories

What do we have, what are we making, what did it cost — from one set of records.

Most small factories answer the first question in a stock register, the second on a whiteboard, and the third at year end when the accountant works it out backwards. Odoo answers all three from the same data, provided the bills of material are right.

The bill of materials decides everything downstream

Stock, costing and planning all hang off the bill of materials. Get it right and every number below it follows; get it approximate and every number below it is approximate too.

Three decisions are worth making before the first one is built: where the recipe stops, how by-products are handled, and whether you need versions so historic production still reflects what was actually made.

Multi-level bills of material

Sub-assemblies as their own records, so a change propagates rather than needing to be repeated.

Job work

Material issued to a third party and returned, with stock staying on your books throughout and the GST documentation the movement requires.

Batch and lot traceability

Tracked from receipt through production to dispatch, so a quality question is answerable in both directions.

Costing method

Standard or average, chosen with your accountant, because changing it mid-year makes the year incomparable.

Planning, once the data is trustworthy

Odoo can generate purchase and production suggestions from demand. It is genuinely useful once stock is accurate and actively misleading before that, because it will confidently recommend purchases based on figures that are wrong.

The sequence that works: get stock right, run production orders manually for a cycle or two, then enable planning. Businesses that switch everything on at once end up ignoring the suggestions, which is the same as not having them.

Odoo Manufacturing — Frequently Asked Questions

Can Odoo handle job work sent to outside processors?+

Yes, through its subcontracting flow. Components are issued to the job worker and the returned item received against the same order, with stock remaining on your books throughout. It needs configuring during implementation.

Do we need Odoo Enterprise for manufacturing?+

Community includes the core manufacturing and bill-of-materials functionality. Enterprise adds quality control, maintenance and shop-floor tooling. Which you need depends on whether those specific capabilities are on your list.

How does Odoo track batches for food or spice production?+

Through lot tracking on the product record, following the batch from goods receipt through the production order to dispatch. It answers both what went into a batch and where that batch went.

What happens to costing when raw material prices move often?+

Average costing recalculates stock value as purchases arrive, so margins reflect what you actually paid. Standard costing holds a fixed rate and reports the difference as variance, which is useful for spotting drift.

Can we run planning before stock records are accurate?+

You can, but the suggestions will reflect the errors. Most implementations get stock right first, run production manually for a cycle, then enable planning once the figures hold up.

How long does a manufacturing implementation take?+

The variable is bill-of-materials data, not software. A unit with documented recipes moves quickly; one where the recipes live with the production supervisor spends most of the project capturing them.
